Cherry is a song performed by Harry Styles. It serves as the fifth track from Harry's album, Fine Line.

Background

Prior to Fine Line tracklist reveal on November 19, 2019, fans had speculated that a song called “Cherry” would feature on the album. [1]

Those who purchased tickets to see Harry during his 2020 Love On Tour noticed that the General Admission pits were named after two fruits, Cherry and Watermelon, with watermelon taken from his November 16 single, “Watermelon Sugar”. [2] The theory was supported further when watermelon slices and cherries were given to fans queuing to see his Saturday Night Live performance on November 16.[3]

“Cherry” is written about Harry’s ex-girlfriend Camille Rowe, following their break-up in July 2018, during a time when Harry was feeling “not great”. Her voice is even featured in the song, in a section of dialogue at the end of the track.[4][5][6]

A section of the song’s lyrics were shared by Metro in a review published on December 6. Another review, this time by i-D also featured some of the track’s lyrics.[7][8]

Music and composition

Harry Styles, during his November 2019 interview with Zane Lowe:

“The night that I wrote it, everyone had left the studio, it was me, Tyler and Sammy, who is our engineer. […] You know, I have all these ideas about records that I want to make, and ‘I wanna make this record in 5 years, and I wanna make this record in 10 years’… and Tyler just said to me, ‘You just have to make the record that you wanna make right now, that’s it.’ So then we stayed up and wrote “Cherry” that night.”[9]

Critical Reception

The A.V. Club opined:

“...and angst over trying to maintain friendship with an ex. “Cherry,” meanwhile, is mired in the petulant stage of a relationship bust-up (“I still miss your accent and your friends / Did you know I still talk to them?”), which also makes it one of the album’s most cutting songs.”[10]

The Consequence of Sound opined:

Fine Line is at its best when it’s at its most specific, as its middle (and strongest) third tackles the stages of romantic grief. “There’s a piece of you in how I dress, take it as a compliment,” Styles croons on the aching “Cherry,” a spiritual successor to his own “Sweet Creature” that would sound right at home on the back end of Rubber Soul (the Capitol version, duh). It’s seemingly about Styles’ ex-girlfriend, French model Camille Rowe; a voicemail playing over the fade-out eliminates any doubt.”[11]

Lyrics

[Intro: Camille Rowe]
Coucou

Don't you call him "baby"
We're not talking lately
Don't you call him what you used to call me
I, I confess I can tell that you are at your best
I'm selfish so I'm hating it
I noticed that there's a piece of you in how I dress
Take it as a compliment

Don't you call him "baby"
We're not talking lately
Don't you call him what you used to call me

I, I just miss
I just miss your accent and your friends
Did you know I still talk to them?

Does he take you walking round his parents' gallery?

Don't you call him "baby"
We're not talking lately
Don't you call him what you used to call me
Don't you call him "baby" (Ooh, ooh)
We're not talking lately
Don't you call him what you used to call me

[Outro: Camille Rowe]
Coucou ! Tu dors ? Oh, j'suis désolée...
Bah non... Nan, c'est pas marrant...
Ouais... On a été à la plage, on a—
Parfait ! [?]
