"Ever Since New York" is a song performed by Harry Styles. It serves as the eighth track from his debut studio album, Harry Styles.
Background[]
The track was first performed on the April 15, 2017, episode of Saturday Night Live along with the previously released Sign Of The Times and officially released with the rest of the Harry Styles on May 12, 2017. He performed the song during Live On Tour and Love On Tour.
In a private show, he detailed that he wrote the song about bad news he got about a family member when he was in a hotel in Brooklyn, New York. It’s heavily believed to be about Harry’s late stepfather Robin Twist, and the series of agonizing events following his cancer diagnosis.[1]
Music and compostion[]
The track is the second song to have been performed off of Harry Styles' self-titled debut solo album. It is a slow folk-style song, which adds to the already eclectic range of genres making up the rest of the album.
Critical Reception[]
Variety writer Eve Barlow stated:
"The song is pure rock troubadour. Think: a young Ryan Adams singing about forlorn swimming pools and talking to walls. “Tell me something I don’t already know,” Styles pines, longingly questioning the loss of a love." [2]
HB In Retrospect opined:
"This song is a slow-folk style song with electric guitar, toms, and soft synths. Harry detailed in a private show that he wrote this song in Brooklyn after he found out about his stepfather’s cancer diagnosis. You can hear the emotional struggle in the lyrics and vocals. In a way he is begging for good news through the line “tell me something I don’t already know.” This song tugs at my heartstrings everytime. (8/10)"[3]
Lyrics[]
Tell me something, tell me something
You don’t know nothing, just pretend you do
I need something, so tell me something new
Choose your words 'cause there's no antidote
For this curse
Oh what's in waiting for
Must this hurt you just before you go
Oh, tell me something I don't already know
Oh, tell me something I don't already know
Brooklyn saw me, empty avenues
There's no water inside this swimming pool
Almost over, that's enough from you
I've been praying, I never did before
Understand I'm talking to the walls
And I've been praying ever since New York
Oh, tell me something I don't already know
Oh, tell me something I don't already know
Oh, tell me something I don't already know
Oh, tell me something I don't already know
