Harry Styles, during his November 2019 interview with Zane Lowe:<blockquote>“Golden”, we wrote on day two of being in Shangri-La […] as soon as we’d done it, it was like, ‘Oh, this is track one’. I used to drive from here to the studio and listen to it. “Golden” was like the perfect PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) song. It’s like driving down the coast, that is what the song is for. It feels so Malibu to me. <ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moIOVVEIffQ&feature=youtu.be&t=1355 youtube.com] - Song composition</ref></blockquote>

Music and composition

Harry Styles, during his November 2019 interview with Zane Lowe:

“Golden”, we wrote on day two of being in Shangri-La […] as soon as we’d done it, it was like, ‘Oh, this is track one’. I used to drive from here to the studio and listen to it. “Golden” was like the perfect PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) song. It’s like driving down the coast, that is what the song is for. It feels so Malibu to me. [2]

Critical Reception

The A.V. Club opined:

“...Fine Line oozes laid-back, Golden State chill—both the stuff of idle daydreams (the hazy sparkle-funk of “Sunflower, Vol. 6”) and idle daydreams come true (the aptly titled “Golden”).”[3]

The Consequence of Sound opined:

“Styles also sells some of these tracks short by restraining himself vocally. He never rises above speaking volume on album opener “Golden”, stripping the propulsive groove and indelible, Fleetwood Mac-inspired backing vocals of their thunder.”[4]

Lyrics

Hey!

Golden, golden, golden as I open my eyes
Holding focus, hoping, take me back to the light
I know you were way too bright for me
I'm hopeless, broken, so you wait for me in the sky
Brown my skin just right
You're so golden

You're so golden
I'm out of my head, and I know that you're scared
Because hearts get broken

I don't want to be alone
I don't want to be alone when it ends
Don't wanna let you know
I don't want to be alone
But I can feel it take a hold (I can feel it take a hold)
I can feel you take control (I can feel you take control)
Of who I am, and all I've ever known
Lovin' you's the antidote
Golden

You're so golden
I don't want to be alone
You're so golden
You're so golden
I'm out of my head, and I know that you're scared
Because hearts get broken

(Golden, golden, golden, golden)
(Golden, golden, golden, golden)
(Golden, golden, golden, golden)
(Golden, golden, golden, golden)
(Golden, golden, golden, golden)
(Golden, golden, golden, golden)
(Golden, golden, golden, golden)
I know that you're scared because I'm so open

You're so golden
I don't want to be alone
You're so golden
You're so golden
You're so golden
I'm out of my head, and I know that you're scared
Because hearts get broken
