Watermelon Sugar is a song by Harry Styles. It was released on November 16, 2019 as the second single and appears as the second track from his second studio album, Fine Line.

Background

Harry Styles sent the Twittersphere into a frenzy on Oct. 22 when he tweeted, "Kiwi walked so Watermelon Sugar could run," potentially teasing a new single that would follow the vibe of his debut album's standout track, "Kiwi."[1]

He video chatted with Capital FM on Thursday (Oct. 31), where the hosts asked him about the cryptic message. But the crooner kept the mystery by simply replying, "You'll have to wait and find out!".[2]

It is believed that Harry recorded a music video for the track on November 29, 2019 on Malibu Beach (Los Angeles, California), the photos were taken by fans where Harry was seen holding watermelons running with models on the beach .

Music and composition

According to Harry, “Watermelon Sugar” was the hardest song to finish creating. He stated the following:

“Well the hardest song to finish was “Watermelon Sugar.” We wrote it in a day and then it took about a year to finish…Which was very frustrating but uh, happy with it now.”-Harry Styles via Capital FM[3]

Critical reception

Mike Wass of Idolator described the song as "a flashy indie-pop moment with one foot in the distant past" while stating that "the '70s inspired anthem really soars on the chorus".[4] Markos Papadatos of Digital Journal wrote that "the song is mid-tempo, refreshing, and radio-friendly".[5] David Levesley, writing for GQ, called the song "the perfect pop for the winter cold" while describing it as "a lusty bop with a chorus perfectly designed for chanting in a stadium" and "bigger, brassier, and more romantic" than Styles' previous release, "Lights Up".[6] Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stones wrote "The rock track has the singer nostalgic for “that summer feeling,” yearning for berries and the taste of watermelon sugar".[7]

Lyrics

Tastes like strawberries
On a summer evening
And it sounds just like a song
I want more berries
And that summer feeling
It's so wonderful and warm

Breathe me in, breathe me out
I don't know if I could ever go without
I'm just thinking out loud
I don't know if I could ever go without

Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
(Watermelon sugar)

Strawberries
On a summer evening
Baby, you're the end of June
I want your belly
And that summer feeling
Getting washed away in you

Breathe me in, breathe me out
I don't know if I could ever go without
I'm just thinking out loud
I don't know if I could ever go without

Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high

I just wanna taste it
I just wanna taste it
Watermelon sugar high

Tastes like strawberries
On a summer evening
And it sounds just like a song
I want your belly
And that summer feeling
I don't know if I could ever go without

Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high
Watermelon sugar high (Sugar)
Watermelon sugar high (Sugar)
